Investigating the Habitat of Wild Bonobos
Wild bonobos are exclusively located in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the south of the Congo River. Our 8-day Congo Expedition for Visiting Bonobos provides an immersive experience in the center of bonobo territory.

Day 1: Arrival in Kinshasa
Upon your arrival at Beach Ngobila Airport in Kinshasa, you will be greeted by a Trek Africa Expeditions representative and transported to your hotel for a briefing and orientation. A one-night stay at the Léon Hotel or a comparable establishment.

Day 2: City Tour of Kinshasa
On a guided tour of Kinshasa, you will have the opportunity to explore the city’s vibrant culture and history, as well as the teeming markets, local landmarks, and the banks of the Congo River. Visits to the National Museum, Kabila’s Mausoleum, and the Place of Independence are among the highlights. Additionally, you will have the chance to observe the distinctive Congolese Dandies, known as Sapeurs, and gain insight into the significance of physical appearance and attire. Before retiring to your hotel for the night, indulge in supper at Chez Flore Restaurant.

Day 3: Kinshasa to Menko
Depart from Ngafura port in Maluku and travel to Tshumbiri, where you will have the opportunity to observe the traffic and residents of the Congo River during a two-day navigation. Immerse yourself in the local culture by engaging in traditional fishing activities along the way. Stay overnight in the village of Menko.

4. Day: Menko – Tshumbiri – Nkala
After brunch, proceed to Tshumbiri, where you will arrive in the afternoon. Transfer by jeep to Nkala, where you will spend the evening and night in a tent, surrounded by the natural grandeur of the Congo wilderness.

Day 5: Bonobos trekking
Start your day early by waking up at 5 a.m. and embarking on an exhilarating journey through the untamed forest in search of bonobos.. As you explore the core of bonobo territory, be sure to bring your breakfast. Follow the guidance of seasoned trackers as you traverse the verdant landscape in search of these captivating primates. Return to the village at approximately noon following an immersive experience with the bonobos. After lunch, you will have the chance to interact with the Téké people during a courtesy visit to the chiefdom and a tour of the village. Attend a captivating performance in the late afternoon that showcases the renowned folklore of Ekoul balow. Upon your return to the camp at approximately 6:30 p.m., you may participate in a conversation with the staff of the NGO Mbomou tour at your discretion. Spend the night in a yurt or at the Mbomou tour inn.

Day 6: Cultural Encounter and Nature Walk
Immerse yourself in the natural grandeur of the environment by embarking on a rejuvenating nature walk. Interact with the Téké people and acquire a deeper understanding of their culture and lifestyle. Return to Tshumbiri for overnight lodging in the afternoon.

Day 7: Return to Kinshasa
Embark on the vessel at approximately 6 a.m. for the return trip to Kinshasa. As you cruise along the Congo River, indulge in breakfast on board. Arrive in Maluku at approximately 4:30 p.m., bid farewell to the boat personnel, and proceed to the city center. Spend the night at the hotel and enjoy a leisure evening.

Day 8: Departure from Kinshasa
Transfer to N’djili International Airport for your departure in the morning, culminating your unforgettable expedition into the Congolese bonobo world.
