DAY 1: Nyakalengija (1700m) to John matte hut (3420m)

You will begin your 5-day mountain trekking adventure in Rwenzori with a briefing and kit selection at the headquarters in Nyakalengija. Once the porters and guides are prepared, you will begin the journey, which will take you through many ecosystems, including tropical woods, montane forests, a bamboo forest, and even some alpine terrain. After a lunch break at the Nyabitaba hut, hikers will cross the Kurt Schaffer Bridge, which spans the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers. Your next stop will be at John Matt, where you may have supper and a night’s rest.

DAY 2: John matte to Elena hut (4563m)

After you have breakfast at John Matte, you’ll have to cross several rivers and streams while navigating a difficult and slippery terrain. The Margherita and Alexandra peaks, in the distance, can be seen along this path. Afterwards, you’ll continue your journey into the lower bigo bog, where boards have been placed to facilitate navigation. Along the way, you’ll come across a variety of species, including groundsels, everlasting flowers, huge lobelia, and more. If you want to have dinner and stay the night in the Elena Hut, you’ll have to keep hiking through the rugged sections of Mount Stanley.

DAY 3: Elena to Bujuku camp (3930m) – Hiking to the top

Today, at approximately 2 in the morning, you will begin your journey to the Stanley glacier. Prepare yourself with your hiking gear and headlamps; you will traverse a rocky region, occasionally use the ropes for support. Your crampons will be required. Skirting the rocks, you will continue your ascent to the Margherita glacier after removing your crampons at the Stanley glacier. The climb to Margherita peak, the Rwenzori’s highest point, begins with a traverse of the Margherita glacier. The next step is to make your way down to Elena’s hut, where you can relax and enjoy lunch. Dinner and the night will be spent at the Bujuku hut, which you will reach after continuing your descent.

DAY 4: Bujuku to Nyabitaba hut (2660m)

Leaving Bujuku after breakfast, you’ll descend into the lower Bigo Bog and eventually reach John Matte, where you may have lunch and a little rest. After that, you’ll head to the Nyabitaba hut for dinner and the night.

DAY 5: Nyabitaba back to Nyakalengija

You will return to Nyakalengija after breakfast in Nyabitaba. The path to Nyabitaba will lead you down through the bamboo groves. Delicate balancing is required on the sometimes slick and muddy descent, as there is little to grab onto when one descends steep rock faces or mud slopes. You will enjoy a lunch break at the Nyabitaba hut after approximately five hours of trekking. The next three hours will be spent descending to Nyakalengija.

You have the option of driving back to Kampala, spending the night in Kasese town, or adding on more safari activities, such as gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, when you get at Nyakengija in the late evening.
