DAY 2: Early Morning Hiking of Mt. Sabinyo

The ascent of Mount Sabinyo, a Virunga volcano, which can only be reached from the park, will begin today when you begin your ascent. An junction of the boundaries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Uganda is marked by the mountain’s top, which lies at 3,645 meters (11,959 ft). The mountain gorillas, who are in grave risk of extinction, call the slopes of Sabinyo home.

The Sabinyo hills feature a lot of craters with sharp ridges, therefore the landscape is rather rough. It takes around eight hours to reach the peak of Mount Sabinyo and another eight hours to descend, giving or taking depending on the hiker’s speed and the state of the weather. Free walking sticks are supplied, and porters can be hired if needed. From 2400 to 2800 meters in altitude, you’ll see a variety of plant life, including the bamboo zone. After you reach the park, take a break and eat your lunch. You should begin to descend the mountain. After supper, head back to the lodge to spend the night.
