The Best Destinations for Witnessing the Big Five in Africa: Where to See Them

Where can one observe the Big Five in Africa? The Big Five, also referred to as the Predators, are the undeniable superstars of Africa, captivating enthusiasts on dawn and twilight game-viewing expeditions. Although the allure of encountering any of the Big 5 in their untamed, natural habitats remains an indelible thrill during an African safari, there may be debates regarding the aesthetics of giraffes and zebras in comparison to buffalo, or the ease of detecting cheetahs versus leopards.

The term “Big Five” was first used in the 19th century by big game hunters who identified African elephants, Cape buffalo, African lions, leopards, and rhinoceros as the five most perilous creatures to pursue on foot in Africa. Fortunately, these majestic animals are now protected in private reserves and national parks, and the term is now used interchangeably with photographic safaris. By participating in these safaris, individuals directly contribute to the conservation of these majestic creatures, thereby addressing threats such as poaching, wildlife trafficking, and habitat devastation.

Locations that are ideal for observing the Big Five in Africa The Big Five are dispersed throughout Africa, with differing concentrations in various regions. For the best chance of observing all members during a single safari, and if fate is on your side, perhaps even in a single game drive or day, consider visiting the following destinations:

Sabi Sand Game Reserve
Sabi Sands is unique in that it permits only guests to access, allowing animals to roam freely along an unfenced border with Kruger National Park. Some of the most opulent lodges in Africa are located within this reserve.

Ngorongoro Crater
This caldera, situated in Tanzania, is home to an estimated 30,000 animals that thrive in its diverse ecosystem. The crater walls are precipitous, which prevents certain animals from descending, resulting in a plethora of wildlife. It is a convenient combination with Tarangire National Park and the Serengeti National Park.

Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park in South Africa is a must-visit destination for any safari enthusiast, as it encompasses a vast expanse of land and serves as an exceptional launching point for both experienced and novice African travelers.

Madikwe Private Game Reserve
Madikwe, which was previously agricultural land in South Africa, is currently undertaking a meticulous rehabilitation process. This reserve includes all members of the Big 5, opulent lodges, and collaborative efforts among various guides. It is in perfect harmony with Sun City, the largest resort in Africa.

Tourists in Uganda have the opportunity to observe the Big Five, with the exception of the Northern White Rhino, which is exclusively located at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and the Entebbe UWEC Zoo. The savannah parks of Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and Lake Mburo National Park provide visitors with an immersive safari game drive experience, allowing them to observe African elephants, Cape buffalo, and pursuing prides of African lions in a nonchalant manner. A patient savannah drive during early or late evenings may reveal the hunting grounds of the elusive leopard.

There is an exceptional opportunity to observe the Big Five in Uganda by embarking on a canoe safari on the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park or on the Kazinga Channel. These majestic creatures are particularly attracted to the shores for a refreshing sip of pure water during the dry seasons (December to February and June to July) due to the heat.
