Exploring Sempaya Hot Springs: Revealing the Myths of Semuliki National Park

The Sempaya Hot Springs, also known as “Sempaya” by the locals, are situated in the center of Semuliki National Park. The appellation has its roots in the Kiswahili phrase “Sehemu mbaya,” which translates to “the difficult side.” It alludes to the difficult terrain that was encountered during the construction of the Fort Portal Bundibugyo road along the rugged ridges of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Although scientists offer a technical account of the hot springs’ origins, the indigenous Bamaga clan, which occupies the vicinity of this natural marvel in Semuliki National Park, has constructed its own narrative through folklore.

The historical significance of the steaming male hot spring is recounted by Mzee Adonia Balinsanga, the chief of the Bamaga clan. Women from the clan encountered a peculiar spectacle while fetching firewood in the forest, as per the Bamaga legend. A unkempt man, clad in bark cloth and wielding a spear, was observed by the group. He was accompanied by a dog that was moving in a zig-zag pattern in the vicinity of the hot spring’s current location. The women promptly informed their spouses of the encounter, and they resolved to invite the enigmatic individual to their village. This man, who was eventually given the name Biteete, continued to hunt until he inexplicably vanished one day. A spear was the sole item discovered during a subsequent investigation of the male hot spring, and it was inferred that he had vanished from the location. The wife, Nyansimbi, also vanished, leaving only her clothing at the female hot spring. Therefore, the Bamaga regarded the male and female hot springs as symbolic abodes of their respective progenitors.

The Bamaga tradition of performing rituals at these hot springs to commemorate their ancestors is maintained annually with the national park’s approval.
