This lodge provides a distinctive blend of the ultimate gorilla trekking experience and a pioneering dedication to community collaboration and reforestation. Bisate Lodge, which is located within the natural amphitheater of an eroded volcanic cone, offers breathtaking vistas of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes as they rise majestically through Afro-alpine forests.

The six luxurious en-suite forest villas are designed to prioritize maximum comfort and breathtaking views, while also adhering to environmentally responsible principles, which are indicative of the rich culture of rural Rwanda. Gorilla excursions depart daily from the Park Headquarters, and walks on Bisate’s property provide the opportunity to participate in a reforestation program and observe birds.

Bisate Lodge is Rwanda’s most luxurious and environmentally conscious safari lodge, dedicated to the most immersive untamed primate experience in Africa.

Rwandan Gorilla Tracking
Rwanda is the home of the endangered mountain gorillas, the largest primate in the world and one of the most endangered species. Join us on an extraordinary gorilla tracking experience. Rwanda is essential to the conservation of the mountain gorilla, as there are only 840 of them left in the wild.

Mountain gorillas, a subspecies of the Eastern gorilla, favor open canopy forests where the forest floor is illuminated. In contrast to their tree-dwelling counterparts, mountain gorillas are herbivores who predominantly consume bamboo, leaves, vines, stems, and roots from the ground. Dominant males lead groups that range from a mated pair to up to thirty individuals, and their movement is characterized by knuckle walking.

Female mountain gorillas are slightly smaller, standing under five feet tall and weighting approximately 100 kilograms, while males can reach a height of six feet and a weight of up to 200 kilograms. Mountain gorillas are restricted to a relatively limited area of their habitat, despite their size.

Optimal Time to Visit
Although chimpanzee trekking is feasible year-round, the dry season is the optimal choice for a more pleasurable experience. The rainy season can present challenging hiking conditions and may induce gorillas to seek refuge, which can complicate the process of observation.

The damp season is contingent upon the country:

Rwanda experiences a brief rainy season from October to November and a prolonged wet season from mid-March to June.
Uganda experiences wet seasons from March to May and September to November.
Congo: The rainy season is from April to October in the region north of the equator, and from November to March in the southern region.
Health and Fitness
It is imperative to be in excellent physical and mental condition, as gorilla treks can last anywhere from 40 minutes to seven hours. It is recommended that visitors refrain from participating if they are ailing, as gorillas are susceptible to human-borne illnesses.

What to Wear For the challenging rainforest hike, dress appropriately:

  1. Trousers and a blouse with a long sleeve.
  2. Hiking footwear that are lightweight.
  3. Optional protective mittens.
  4. Codes of Conduct and Regulations

Observing gorillas necessitates compliance with regulations that protect both the gorillas and the visitors:

  • Adhere to the instructions provided by the guide at all times.
  • Maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters from gorillas.
  • Maintain a submissive posture and maintain a low profile in the presence of a rushing silverback.
  • Refrain from making sudden movements or emitting loud sounds.
  • If accosted, refrain from touching young gorillas.
  • Refrain from maintaining protracted eye contact with gorillas.
  • Avoid the use of light photography.
  • Prevent the transmission of illnesses to gorillas by maintaining excellent health.
  • Groups of up to eight individuals are permitted to visit each gorilla family once daily for a maximum of one hour.
  • There is a prohibition on smoking, drinking, and dining within a 200-meter radius of a gorilla family.
  • Littering is strictly prohibited.
  • Children under the age of fifteen are prohibited from participating in gorilla excursions.
  • Although gorillas are not inherently aggressive, it is essential to adhere to safety protocols. Fees are a contribution to the ongoing conservation efforts, and sightings are not guaranteed.
